English Synopsis: Ka Hālau Hana Keaka was established in 1996 following the production of Kaluaikoʻolau: ke kāʻeʻaʻeʻa o nā pali Kalalau. As many of us, members of the troupe, were students and instructors of Hawaiian language at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, this program resided under the auspices of Kawaihuelani. Hawaiian theatre became a pathway and new domain for language learning and fluency cultivation. A total of nine original Hana Keaka have since been produced: Kaluaiko‘olau (1995), Māuiaakalana (1997), Māuiakamalo: Ka ho‘okala kupua o ka moku (1998-2000), Nāwahī: A hero remembered (2001), Kamapua‘a (2004-2007), Hawai‘inuiākea (2008), He Mo‘olelo Hana Keaka no ‘Elua mau Me‘e Hawai‘i (2013), Lā‘ieikawai (2015) and ‘Au‘a ‘Ia: Holding On (2019). The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa now has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Hawaiian Theatre that was built on the framework and efforts of Ka Hālau Hana Keaka and Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language.
