Kahikina is a kupa of Ka‘ōhao, a practicing kumu hula, and an Assistant Professor of Hawaiian language at Kawaihuelani, where she focuses her teaching on comprehension of and creativity in various forms of Hawaiian composition. Her projects at the University include editing and publishing the Hawaiian language newsletter Ka Ulu Hoi, directing Ke Pānānā Aloha Writers’ Institute, and continuing in the effort to connect Kawaihuelani’s students with other Hawaiian language speakers in our community. Her research is most inspired by the confluence of Hawaiian literature, language, worldview, and self-determination; her life, by the intricacies of rasing the next generation of ʻAipōhaku.
